The too white thing...I feel like certain things aren't meant for me - like Public Enemy or whatever. The work is like a message of solidarity that I am allowed to hear and understand but it's not meant for me or people like me explicitly.

It's weird how personally we can take media - for example - being insulted by a commercial - that media is mass produced and consumed and that we take it personally. It's like being from some pagan culture and believing that a god or goddess is bestowing or witholding fortune in a way.

I heard a program on the radio once about how minorities weren't being included in advertising to a certain degree and the representatives on the program were slighted by the underrepresentation of blacks and hispanics specifically - and I remember thinking "What the fuck?" Why would people want the group they identify with to be targeted and psychologically fucked with in order to get them to buy stuff?" The point they were making was easy enough to understand, but I have never seen people like myself in terms of aesthetic or style represented in commercials, and the times that i have, I've generally been offended because of stereotyping ( the stupid punker / the manipulative self-centered woman) or the idealization of stupid skinny women who are paid to appear superior by virtue of their figures or hair...Is this a luxury of whiteness? This offense that I take when I pay attention to advertising?

Chad (my queer room mate) gets mad about the deoderant body spray commercials where straight guys are being overwhelmed with "attractive women" in large numbers. He says, "It makes me mad how stupid they think men are," and I say, "Well you are - it's just that it's chicks and it doesn't appeal to you. If he were being mobbed by a gang of sexy men in jock straps, you would be into it, right?" Which is not to say that men go for these commercials - the point is that the advertising is effective or it wouldn't be used. Right? He had to concede my point to a degree. Sounds harsh, but men are (and here I'm stereotyping and generalizing) highly succeptible to visual stimulation in terms of sexuality. They say women are to a much lesser degree. So therefore women are used to market to women and women are used to market to men - but in different ways.

They want US to want to be her and they want them to want to be IN her.

And what, you ask, does this have to do with being too white?

I'll tell you later!!!
